Homes on this coast get dirty in a particular way. Fine sand comes in from the beach and works its way into floors and rugs, salt air leaves a film on glass, mirrors and metal fittings, and terraces collect dust that blows straight back inside every time a door opens. A cleaning routine here has to deal with all of that, not only the usual kitchen and bathroom work.

Second homes have their own rhythm. A property that stands closed for weeks needs airing and a proper reset before anyone arrives, and only a light check-over while it is empty. A permanently occupied home needs the opposite: little and often, so it never drifts far from where you want it.

How often is right?

There is no single right answer, but there are patterns. A permanently occupied family home usually works best weekly. A couple, or a home that stands empty part of the week, is often fine fortnightly. A second residence used a few times a year tends to be better served by a thorough clean before each arrival than by anything regular.

It is worth saying that regular cleaning and deep cleaning are not the same thing. Regular visits keep a home level; every so often it still needs the fuller treatment, inside the appliances and behind the furniture. Most homes settle into a regular rhythm with a deep clean once or twice a year on top of it.
